Some of my clients are really adorable: they call to give me the names of some internet sites and ask if I can publish their job ads there. Of course I can do that, provided that the mentioned sites are actually job boards and not corporate HR sites of an international recruitment agency or of a company where they post their own jobs only… (I’m talking experience here 😉 )

So last week I was asked to check on a Swedish site that was part of a specialised journal. I can’t help it but when I am doing research on this kind of job boards, there are two little “warning” signals that start blinking in my head:

  1. The online version of the job section has poor visitor statistics but since it is more advantageous to sell print vacancies, the publishing house can’t be bothered to improve the situation. Apart from that most magazines offer a free online posting when you buy one in the press. Yeah, that’s how they appreciate the online recruitment industry…
  2. The site is run by an internet-only job site or they have a co-operation with one of those. This means very often that your ad is posted on both sites and you pay the price of the “real” job board only.

Given that the site in question was hosted in Sweden, I took a wild guess and presumed that it could have something to do with StepStone and Jobbsverige. I was right.

I called the site to gain more insight into the nature of their partnership and finally spoke to the job advertisement sales manager, who was responsible for the press ads… There was actually no one who was exclusively taking care of online jobs. He tried (in vain) to sell me a print ad saying that this was the only way to post a job on their web site. Otherwise I would have to buy a StepStone posting (StepStone actually powers the site) AND a special package that would include their own and several other Swedish sites.

All this sounded a bit weird to me so I asked him to send me all this information by email. He replied that he had much work this afternoon, that he would go out for lunch now and that I should call him up after 3 p.m. in case he hadn’t sent anything through. I smiled mildly into my telephone and asked him if he was not interested in working with an HR communication agency.

At a quarter past two I received his email.

Since none of the Monsters has bothered to react to my little request last week, I was all the happier to find a small parcel in my postbox last night. The German Jobscout24 Online Marketer Christoph has sent me three Scouties in order to “rethink and, eventually, distract my love for M… in order to spend my rainy lunch breaks with the Scouties.” That’s a really nice idea! Thank you very much for that.

Well, actually I do not feel love for any job board. I prefer a real person for that 😉

Today’s lunch break was rainy again, and I introduced two of the three scouts – I gave one to my colleague Isabelle – to our office plant Bob (it’s his haircut). They really enjoyed themselves. Please scroll upwards to view the photos.

And, by the way, I am always fond of surprises like these. Don’t hesitate.

I came across Leisurejobs because I found this very amusing press release on onrec a few days ago: In a survey carried out nationally, they found out that the gym was the number one location for Desperate Housewives and

revealed that personal trainers (42%) and tennis coaches (30%) were the hottest targets of desperate housewives leaving yoga teachers (2%), golf coaches (1%) and spinner instructors (1%) hanging out to dry.

So if you were thinking about spicing up your sex professional life, why not start a career as a tennis coach?

leisurejobs-screen.jpgThe job board itself displays a rather boring design (click on the thumbnail for a full view). I would have expected some more graphical elements to provide the site with a more dynamic and lively feel. Come on, this is a board for leisure staff. Apart from that, the somewhat 2,500 vacancies are generated by about 20 different companies.

One very good point is the (unfortunately very well hidden) career zone, in which professionals give candidates advice on application and recruiting processes for specific industries. This section should be emphasised more clearly because this is one of the key elements to attract and retain users.

A: Ich möchte eine Anzeige kaufen.
B: Das kostet 400 Euro. Möchten Sie das Unternehmenslogo auch veröffentlichen?
A: Ja natürlich.
B: Dann liegt der Preis bei 500 Euro.
A: Wieso?
A: Aha. Sonst noch was?
B: 1.400 Euro.
A: Was????? Da gehe ich zur Konkurrenz!

… nur dort wird es kaum besser sein.

Typical moments in an international HR communication agency’s business day.
Today: What it is like to buy a vacancy from a French job site.

A: I’d like to buy an ad.
B: That’s 400 Euros. Would you like to place your company logo as well?
A: Yes, of course.
B: Then the price will be 500 Euros.
A: Why?
B: That’s just the way it is. To activate the hyperlink towards the firm’s homepage is another 70 Euros.
A: Hm. Anything else?
B: The vacancy text must not exceed 2,000 characters, space characters included. The job title may only count up to 30 characters and the company description another 250 characters. In which region would you like to post your job?
A: How many are there?
B: 22 in metropolitan France, one is contained in each offer. Any other region will be charged 50 Euros each.
A: And if I wish to publish the job role for the whole country?
B: That would be 1,400 Euros.
A: What????? I will look for another site!

… but you will hardly get any better.

A: Oui, bien sûr.
B: Donc ça sera 500 Euros.
A: Pourquoi?
A: Euh, ok. Autre chose?
A: Comment?????
